This is a free introduction to the series entitled The Breathable Body - Transforming Your World One Breath at a Time. Study Group. This series is designed as a book club for reading, discussing, and practicing activities from The Breathable Body to explore somatic movement principles from Continuum, Buteyko, Structural Alignment and biochemical, biomechanical and psychophysiological tracking. Using The Breathable Body book as a study guide, participants will have access to over 35 years of knowledge and wisdom of professional practice with breathing. Participants will learn how to identify breathing rhythms and patterns that may express past adverse childhood events and current stresses, how to invite a growing awareness for the client of these patterns, and how to co-regulate the nervous system via breathing. Greater breathing health can translate into greater organism health and more effective skills in working with clients.
Practitioners will learn how to include Continuum principles of fluidity, adaptability, tissue flexibility, mutability, coherency, connection, and the ability of the body to allow a release of held structural forms in their work with clients. Class practice will offer a greater sense of sensual embodiment, as breathing is meant to provide pleasure, love, tenderness, and kindness. Practitioners will also learn the basic principles of the Art and Science of Breathing and the Buteyko Breathing Education Program. These skills will provide insight into their personal state of health and enable practitioners to advise clients when to seek outside help with breathing health. They will be able to discuss with clients the neurobiology of breathing as it relates to the autonomic nervous system and states of rest and settle, activation, depression, anxiety, and panic. Participants may gain clarity and effectiveness in spotting dysfunctional breathing patterns in themselves and their clients, making any somatic practice richer and more effective.
Learning Goals - Participants will learn:
- How to "breathe with" pain, anxiety and respiratory diseases for greater ease and reduction of symptoms
- The Anatomy of Physiology of Breathing and the effect of posture on breathing
- The benefits of nose breathing and the adverse effects of mouth breathing on psychology, physiology, facial structures and the anatomy of the torso
Live participation is strongly encouraged. However, those who register in advance will receive the recordings after each session is completed.
