In today’s increasingly disconnected world, we are faced with trying to find (and feel) a sense of relationship amongst experiences that divide us from ourselves, others and the world around us. Those who hold multicultural identities know the tension between this fragmentation and connection well. As bridges between their own cultural identities, multicultural individuals have learned to integrate complex differences into relationships, which is needed in today’s world more than ever. For this reason, it is essential for somatic practitioners to truly embody multicultural awareness in our healing relationships, for if we cannot accept our own diversity, how can we do so for others? This workshop will support participants to bridge their own internal divides by using somatic awareness tools to understand the felt-sense of cultural embodiment and explore moving between cultural identities with Embodied Code-Switching®.
Participants will:
1: Begin to define the somatic experience of identity, and recognize the facets of culture that inform, create and define our sense of self, other, and community.
2: Incorporate somatic practices to explore three levels of awareness that provide the foundation for cultural embodiment (social awareness, emotional awareness and environmental awareness) and the ways each informs the cultural identities they hold.
3: Explore the movement of, and between, our cultural identities with Embodied Code-Switching®, a somatic and movement practice which facilitates a conscious relationship with our cultural identities by expanding personal choices and increasing fluidity between cultural contexts.
