Knaster, M. (1996) stated, "Healing requires changing our relationship to our memories. Transformation comes from investing the traumatic event with a new meaning. It necessitates replacing unsuccessful episodes with successful ones and imprinting new neuromuscular patterns." (p.127)
The human movement study of Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis explores the emotional and psychological dimensions of specific movement patterns. In this workshop, the facilitator will guide experiential activities to discover the association between movement and narratives. In addition, she will share clinical applications of Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis in somatic movement therapy and psychotherapy settings to promote psychological well-being through movement practice among people with a history of relational trauma.
Participants will:
- increase awareness of nonverbal cues and the impact of subtle changes
- gain tools to regulate yourself when encountering dysregulating interactions
- develop observation skills and somatic inquiry
PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is designed for pre- and licensed psychotherapists who want to develop observation skills and somatic inquiry. Other professionals are welcome to attend, with the understanding that some of the material may be outside the ISMETA Scope of Practice for Somatic Movement Educators and Therapists.

Mihyun Lee is a Certified Laban Movement Analyst, Registered Somatic Movement Educator/Therapist, and Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. She is a dance artist, choreographer, and movement-oriented psychotherapist whose practice explores the intersection of narrative and movement. She has developed a unique approach that draws on Somatic Psychology and Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis to assess the body’s primal expressiveness. As a Somatic Movement Therapist, she has facilitated a somatic movement group practice, “Relationship and Movement,” for adults facing historical relational challenges inspired by Dr. George’s Adult Attachment Projective picture system, Dr. Perry's relational health, Infant-Parent Mental Health concept of "Serve and Return," and principles of Contact Improvisation. As an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, she serves a diverse population at Courageous Counseling Center in San Francisco.
