2025 Call for Art: Islands of Coherence Exhibition Series
from Elaine Colendrea

We are broadcasting near and far for artists to create new work responding to the theme islands of coherence. This evocative phrase arose from the research of Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine and philosopher Isabelle Stengers, whose studies in physics disclosed how systems infuse themselves with more information and transform to include new patterns and behaviors.

When a complex system is far from equilibrium,
small islands of coherence in a sea of chaos
can shift a system to a higher order.
– Ilya Prigogine & Isabelle Stengers

For me, somatic practice is an island of coherence, a way for my system to be receptive to the information that passes between me and the world I live in, which guides me continually towards a more inclusive way of being. How do you make sense of being in the world? How do you navigate chaos? What are your islands of coherence?

There is no submission deadline. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout 2025. Virtual and live events will be scheduled throughout this year and next.

Our first Islands of Coherence exhibition and performance will be during “The Art of Fluid Movement Continuum Retreat” at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, NY from June 29 – July 4. If you would like to be considered for this event, please indicate so in your application.
